A Brief History of Las Vegas: From the Sands to the Strip

Las Vegas is a paradise for gambling and entertainment. The city was founded in 1905 by John C. Fremont, who built the Las Vegas Springs Hotel to accommodate travelers on their way to Los Angeles. The hotel was later renamed the Las Vegas Inn when it became a stop on the railroad line that connected Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, Utah. One year later, gambling made its first appearance in Las Vegas when Fremont allowed workers at his ranch to gamble on horse races. Fremont had a love for gambling, which led him to build three casinos: The El Cortez, Hotel Last Frontier, and The D Las Vegas Casino. In 1941, Howard Hughes bought out Fremont’s stake in the hotels and casino businesses and renamed them as Hughes Hotels and Casinos (now known as MGM).
